Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy is a simple, non-invasive procedure which is used to treat pre-cancerious skin lesions.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses a special cream together with a light source to treat certain sun-damaged skin spots and early skin cancers.
After the cream is applied, light activates it to destroy abnormal cells, while leaving healthy skin less affected.

There are two main ways the light can be delivered:

  • Using a medical light (laser or non-laser lamps) in the clinic

  • Using natural daylight outdoors

PDT with Light (Laser or Non-Laser Lamps)

How it works: After applying the cream, a special lamp or laser is used in the clinic to shine light on the treated skin.

Time needed: Usually 5–45 minutes, depending on the light source.

What should I take into account?

  • Treatment is done entirely in the clinic; not affected by weather.
  • The light can feel quite bright and may sting or burn during treatment.

Natural Daylight PDT

How it works: After applying the cream and sunscreen, patients simply go outdoors and let daylight activate the treatment.

Time needed: About 2 hours outdoors.

What should I take into account?

  • Longer treatment time
  • Depends on the weather and season

What to Expect Afterwards

  • The treated skin usually becomes red and sore, like sunburn, and may blister or crust for a few days.
  • This reaction peaks around 3–4 days and heals within a week.
  • The result is usually clearer, smoother skin with fewer sun-damaged spots, and excellent cosmetic outcome.
